Check IMOU Dual Ranger nix for alarm systems

A good and inexpensive camera, but the Check IMOU Dual Ranger shows that the camera is not for alarm systems.

The IMOU Dual Ranger camera is often praised in reviews, and rightly so – at least in the standard application.

Functionality

The camera can be integrated either via the in-house IMOU app or in Home Assistant, for example. Basic functions such as image transmission and control work as expected.

Criticism: Alarm functions

The problem starts with safety-relevant functions such as:

  • Motion detection,
  • Headlight control,
  • Alarm messages to cell phone,
  • Saving of recordings when an alarm is triggered.

IMOU app

The IMOU app partially enables these functions, but not reliably. Security-related activities often remain inactive, even if the functions have been activated.

IMOU offers scenes for activation/deactivation, but uses the camera’s privacy mode as the central control – a clear indication that IMOU is aware of the problem. Although this solution works, it is impractical and not appropriate for an alarm system.

Home Assistant

The alarm functions in Home Assistant are also almost useless. As in the IMOU app, privacy mode remains the only reliable way to manage alarms.

Conclusion

The IMOU Dual Ranger cannot function as part of a comprehensive security system, but must be set up and managed as an isolated device outside a system.

It is ultimately up to the user whether they want to integrate an unstable element into their alarm system.
