DLT eLearning Thai driver’s license renewal (Nov. 2023)

General dilemma and whining about the DLT eLearning Thai driving license renewal ! Please note that the procedure here describes the procedure and the surrounding at the “Department of Land Transportation, Pattaya” at the beginning of Nov. 2023. We all know that at the next “Department of Land Transportation, Hua Hin, Rayong, Bangkok etc. can look completely different again. But the basics should be about the same.

Nicht vergessen “Same Same But Different”

Currently the DLT eLearning system, relevant and you have to complete it. In the “Department of Land Transportation, Pattaya” I have seen different handling of the expression, one Beate is happy when he sees the expression, the other takes it for the documents.

You can access the DLT eLearning at https://www.dlt-elearning.com. It consists of a total of 60 minutes of video, interrupted by short blocks of questions. The questions are easy to answer if you follow the video. You will also be asked about your presence in between, which you have to confirm within 3 minutes.

Print out the DLT eLearning QR code document, which can also be done in a copy shop and can also be enlarged to DIN A4, as is usual here. You need the original and a copy.

In principle you can just make 2 copies of everything and then you won’t go wrong.

  • Copy of passport, the usual first two pages (ID and bio data). Of course, you also have to have your passport with you and present it. Two copies
  • Copy of the current visa stamp in the passport, with arrival stamp. Two copies
  • “Resident certificate” in duplicate (not a copy). You can get the “Resident certificate” at “Immigration” (approx. 700 THB), see the end of the article. 2 originals
  • If you have a “Work permit”, use this instead of the “Resident certificate”. The Blue Book must contain the addresses. Two copies
  • You usually don’t need passport photos because you will be photographed digitally and the image will be copied directly into the ID card
  • A medical certificate is required when renewing a two-year or five-year license. Information and link to a clinic at the end of the article. One original and one copy
  • The Thai driving license(s) that you have to hand in at immigration. These are collected directly. If you do not have the original driver’s license(s), you should report to the police, immigration or Department of Land Transportation in good time. Two copies

Passport, work permit (Blue Book), resident certificate, Thai driving license and medical certificate must be presented in original.

The expiry of the driver’s license extension

I strongly recommend getting to the Land Transport Office as early as possible on the day you want to renew your license. Pattaya opens at 08:00 am, service starts at 08:30 am. Keep in mind that most departments tend to open later.

There are training rooms at the Department of Land Transportation, Pattaya. If you don’t have internet for DLT eLearning, ask the “Department of Land Transportation” whether you can do this on site.

After you arrive at the Land Transport Office, stand in line at the Driver License Extension counter to have your required documents checked as listed above.

Next you get a number, with this you go to the first floor and show an officer your number, you are led into a small room where your color vision and reaction reactions are tested, you may have to wait in another room beforehand.

For the color vision test, the three colors red, yellow and green light up randomly in different places on a traffic light. All you have to do is say what color you see.

During the reaction test you sit on a chair with an accelerator pedal and a brake pedal. When the light is green you accelerate, and when the light is red you quickly hit the brakes. You do the test with just one foot, it’s easy.

After the two tests you will receive your documents and can go to the checkout to pay. I paid about 760 Bath for the motorcycle and car.

Now you wait until your number is called to be photographed. 10 minutes later you will receive your driving license(s).

… Complete

You can get the “Medical Certificate” for 100 Bath at the Buakhouw Clinic: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Qas9fTjkkziH8Mzm8

The driver’s license is not sufficient for identification, you need your passport. Tell the staff that you need it to renew your driver’s license.

You can get the “Resident certificate” from the immigration office responsible for you. The cost is around 700 Bath. You can make the necessary copies on site. All the evidence you need should be in your passport. Normally the registration certificate etc. is always stapled or attached to the passport by immigration. You should have 3 passport photos with you.

PS: Sorry if the sound wasn’t that good, the new microphones probably still need some adjustment 😁
