Mac VirtualBox VM on external hard drive

Many people have problems with a virtual machine that is on an external hard drive. It ranges from sporadic crashes to virtual machines destroying themselves.

Now it’s an extra from Apple, if you know it, the virtual machines load without any problems. This extra isn’t something that will put you at a disadvantage, but rather provides the Mac with extended functions.

Mac VirtualBox VM on external hard drive. How to do it in the video 👍

About the video itself, in the video I also go into copying, cloning and moving virtual machines with VirtualBox.

The video also discusses formatting partitions with “Mac OS Extended (jurnaled)”. Of course you can also use “APFS” as a file system. However, I have had good experiences with “Mac OS Extended (jurnaled)”.

Notes on data backup

Data may be lost when processing the storage medium: hard disk, USB stick etc., which can have several causes. Liability is generally excluded.

If you follow the topics and examples discussed in this article and use them, make a data backup beforehand.

Mac VirtualBox VM on external hard drive, why problems?

Most hard drives are sold over the counter with “ExFAT” formatting for compatibility. If your virtual machine is on an “ExFAT” formatted partition, the Mac system cannot handle the VM.

Typical symptoms are: Freezing, crashes, blue screen and incorrect disking of data in wrong areas which leads to the destruction of the *.VDI file (Virtual Disk Image) or the *.DKMS.

What can you do ?

To avoid errors, I recommend using a new hard drive that you partition and format with the “Mac OS Extended (jurnaled)” file system.

You will achieve the best result if you clone the virtual machines to the new drive.

The new clone of the virtual machine may not work. You can then repeat the cloning, but first select a restore point on the original virtual machine.

VirtualBox then clones the virtual machine with this restore point. Please see the video for details.
