Nostr Protocol | Social Media|What’s Up

Here is an introduction to Nostr, a decentralized social network, with a basic introduction to the world of Nostr. Nostr is new, it is in its infancy. There are also many extras in its handling and use.

There have been many attempts to outpace the big social media platforms, whether Nostr can do it is a question in itself. But the way is in principle already very good. Nostr is an acronym for “Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays” – where relay stands for server.

Logging in is done with a “Private Key”, the creation of the key is done together with the creation of the Public Key when logging in. When logging in you can use your name, use another name or use no name (then the Public Key is shown as user). The Private Key is only for you to log in and must not be shared (it’s your password !).

You can learn a lot about the Nostr protocol on the homepage: https://nostr.com/

Your public posts can be seen by everyone, personal messages are encrypted. There is also the possibility to make it look like “Telegram”, and groups / communities are also possible.

Let’s stay with the Telegram comparison. Nostr does not offer you any context or topics, just like Telegram. You have to search for yourself at the beginning and create your own context / topic, people you follow.

Using Nostr Protocol

There are some WEB sites, online access that you can use and there are apps for Apple and Android.

At https://nostr.com/clients you can find a list of tools, WEB sites and APPs you can use.

My test results:

https://anigma.io/ (WEB site, would say outdated)
https://damus.io/ (recommendation for Apple)
https://nvote.co/ (WEB site, currently offline)
https://snort.social/ (WEB site, good but not bug free)

Android, I can’t test at the moment, but I would appreciate the comments about Android APPs 👍

Well, as you can tell, my enthusiasm is limited. As for the WEB pages and APPs, there is still a lot of need for function and troubleshooting.

We cannot develop anything further that we do not use. The need arises from the use. Without need, there is no benefit and no development. Without use, we tread water and make no progress.

Decentralized and no possibility of censorship

The SERVER, the so called “Relays” reflect the content. If you use 4 relays and generate a post, this post will be stored on the 4 relays. If you expand to 10 relays, your post will be stored on these 10 relays. If you set up your own relay, your own server, and remove all other relays, your post will be stored only on your server, with groups you can do the same.

Your mail is associated with your public key which assigns your identity to the mail. Deleting your mail or changing your mail is only possible by logging in with your private key. So no one can interfere, but you pass on your private key.

Enough written, let’s continue with the application demonstration in the video !

Why is nostr an issue right now ?

From 25.08.2023 the “Digital Service Act” comes into force and that for all big platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube etc.

Please make your own picture of how you see the matter. A Google search will give you a lot of information that will help you. Then decide whether Nostr is something for you or not.

Payment / Wallet in Nostr

In Nostr you can also pay, this runs via Lightning a payment service under Bitcoin, to express it understandably. for this you can create a wallet or use for example also a bitcoin / Lighting wallet like Wallet of Satoshi.
