Book and author info

Helmut Szynka’s Silesian surname means “ham” in German, which is why he calls himself “Helmut Ham” on Facebook. He emigrated and lived in the Philippines for eight years and later in Thailand, where he now lives. Now he takes a look back and tells the first part of his life story.

Helmut grew up in a family of miners on the Lower Rhine. He has a domineering father with dishonest morals and a mother who submits to him. Helmut therefore finds a sense of security with his two grandmothers, with whom he has an intimate relationship. As an altar boy, he wants to fulfill his dream of becoming a sexton and organist. He works hard towards this goal, but then the colliery closures get in the way and the family is forced to move. From one day to the next, Helmut loses his friends and embarks on other careers. He trained as a food salesman, managed a band and had to deal with the dubious machinations of some companies and superiors. In the end, he decides to become self-employed. He realizes that defeats always turn out to be a stroke of luck and wants to encourage others – because somehow it always goes on.

Helmut Szynka’s memoirs are characteristic of the time and the many photos vividly illustrate his life. Some people will recognize themselves here.
